RE: Keep Our National Forests From An Economic Shutdown!

Dear [President Obama] or [Senator] [LAST NAME]:

I am writing to respectfully request that you reconsider the confirmation of Mr. Harris Sherman to be Under Secretary of Agriculture for Natural Resources and the Environment.

The American people had no opportunity to examine the background of Mr. Sherman before or after his confirmation hearing on September 30, before the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry and his confirmation October 8 with no public announcement.

In light of the numerous allegations of actions harmful to the economy and to public confidence that have been leveled against Mr. Sherman, I sincerely ask that you reconsider his confirmation in order to provide adequate time for Mr. Sherman to be more thoroughly vetted and be given the due diligence that he and the American people deserve.

It's important that we as a nation are confident that Mr. Sherman has not engaged in any type of extortion or "shakedown" to obtain funding for wildlife studies as a condition of oil and gas companies obtaining drilling permits, or engaged in any "pay to play" scheme.

It's also important that we be assured that Mr. Sherman has never shown favoritism in performing his duties by giving special access to environmental organization personnel while denying the same courtesy and concern to the general public or to economic interests.

In terms of altering public comment documents to make them appear more favorable to environmental group positions and less favorable to economic developer positions, I feel it is of the utmost importance that Mr. Sherman be allowed to dispel allegations that he has ever done such a thing.

Lastly, in terms of allegations that Mr. Sherman has interfered with contractual agreements and property rights, it may become appropriate for the Agriculture Committee to convene a hearing which would allow witnesses who feel harmed to present their stories for consideration.

For the sake of our economy, our confidence in government's ethical standards, and our government's balance sheets, I respectfully request that you reconsider the confirmation of Mr. Harris Sherman to be Under Secretary of Agriculture for Natural Resources and the Environment.
